Gutter guards have their place in maintenance, they're tools like a wrench or a screwdriver - best not mix up their uses - but they're far too often sold as the "end all" of your leaf problems. The best words to describe them would be "mitigating tools": can lessen or draw out the effects of leaves and other debris (mitigate) but the guards need cleaning / maintenance themselves, too.

They're especially great against larger leaves or if you have a cone problem (clogging your down pipes) though for the latter there's a more economical solution usually.
